10 - Blonde Redhead

I have a lovely dress. . . .

And a lovely, lovely housemate. . .

who rests his hands at the top of his pants like an old man. . .

and whips up tastey dinners at the drop of a hat.

Life is nice,
life is neat,
life isn't perfect,
but delicately sweet.

Fools Rush In - Bow Wow Wow

Hey, I'm all for queing up for something really cool and fun. . . but no one in this line looked like they were having heaps of fun this morning, standing the in rain. And the line went on. . .

and on . . . .

All for this bag. . . .

My issues with the bag, are this:
A. I heard a funny rumour that the bag is ironically made of plastic fibres.
B. Call me "judgemental" but I would die of shock if I saw a fashionista packing her groceries in that thing. It's a hard thing to remember, but I do bring my own bags to the grocery store. And I don't see a lot of others that aren't:
a. hippies
b. eco- moms
C. That bag really isn't big enough to hold anything substantial. What are you gonna throw in there? A head of lettuce and a bottle of water?

So in conclusion, while I love a good fashion trend, let's just call it what it is, and not hide being some faux eco message. Saving the world, it's not. And if it takes a bag to make people aware, it's a rather sad world we live in, n'est-ce pas?

I'm queing up for this one.

Another Chance - Roger Sanchez (like 8 years ago!!)

Once upon a time, I went out dancing, in the south of France almost every night. With my beautiful, sunbaked, sometimes drunken european friends, by my side, these nights usually ended in complete and utter debauchery. Anyhow, some years ago, this Roger Sanchez tune was very popular. . .but I particularly liked the video.

So sweet and so sad. This girl finds there's no room in this world for her big heart, so her heart begins to shrink.

I found there was no room on the subway for my big magazine. But it wasn't going anywhere except for back to the office. So I dutifully lugged it onto the subway train.
This was the day after the Nylon party. You can see the fatigue in my puffy face.

A La Nit - Savath and Savalas

Waiter, there's a band in my living room. As I lay feverish and tired in my bed, the bands played on. Actually the last group which played, "The Beck Berger Trio", was awesomely melodic and I drifted to sleep.

My roommate threw a party (at our place) to raise money for a dance which she is currating at the Galapogos Art Space in Williamsburg on July 15th. We still have a keg and a half leftover from the event, so if you feel like a frosty one, anytime soon, give me a ring (we keep a pitcher in the fridge). I'm having one right now. . .

Sickfit - Madvillain

I am violently ill. Just ask my toilet. . . we bonded last night. I think I caught some sort of stomach bug, mixed in with a general run-downness, that happens when you party too much and get too little sleep. My life is not always like this. . . and since it is, for a moment, I say . . . laissez le bon temps rouler! (cough, cough).
But since I'm bedridden, I can take a moment to post some Nylon/Myspace party pictures.

I was not lucky enough to grab a completed goody bag. . . but if I had, it would have had, all this cool stuff in it. . . with a high re-sale value on eBay ;)

Greg from the Misshapes is such a cutie. He's always the one to blink when you take a picture, he coined the phrase "poor man's fifth avenue", in regards to Chinatown.

I think it's rather sweet that the girls from the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants totally roll together. You always read about all the Hollywood cattiness. It's just nice to see people who actually are friends.

Bloody Social was all sweaty because they had just gotten off stage. Nice lads. Interesting interview they gave. . .

I love, love, LOVE the Plastiscines. I mean who doesn't love cute French girls? And you know what? They are really, really nice. I enjoyed chatting with them pre-party. . .

Alpha and Omega - Boards of Canada

I am getting a new roommate for two weeks.
He is Italian and I'm excited (yay!)
However I can no longer sit around the apartment in my underwear, which is my favorite summer activity (boo!)

My friend Ariana does not like this colour combination but I'm totally on the contrary. I love this colour combination. I wish I had bright green pants, so I could imitate it. . . although, I wonder what else would look good with these bright green pants. . . umm EVERYTHING ACTUALLY!
(photo: http://hel-looks.com. . . duh. . . it's the best place for streetwear photos).

Kissalude - Basement Jaxx

While the rest of the world was getting their panties in a bunch over the kiss, I'm staring hard and thinking, "I wonder who makes those shoes?".

Well, they're Chloe (surprise, surprise!) and they're on sale on www.net-a-porter.com. If you have a small foot, you just may be in luck. I say, there are a lot worse things that can happen to you in New York, besides getting a kiss from Liv Tyler. . .

Cinematic Orchestra - Ma Fleur

I received an i-tunes gift card for my birthday which I've been wanting to spend. The balance, has been sitting on my i-tunes, dangling in front of me, taunting me to buy, buy, buy. But what do I buy? I remembered that the Cinematic Orchestra just released a new album (they're playing the Summerstage in Manhattan in July). So like any smart consumer, I went to sample the wares on myspace first. I wasn't sure how sold I was at first. . . it's a bit different than what I've come to expect from them. . . which certainly isn't a bad thing. As far as their orchestral arrangement, it would seem as if they took a nod from Rachel's. And I have no problem with that at all. . .

But my roommate, Ann. . . sold me. She slept like a baby through the entire album (twice, after I purchased it). Anything which brings this much peace and serenity is a sure keeper. What I love about the Cinematic Orchestra is that something about them is so deliciously filling. . . contently. . . full. . .I am.

People's Parties- Joni Mitchell

If you've not had a chance to check out Alter yet. . . now is the time. Alter is run by these lovely boys called Roy and Tommy. Both are really charming and talented. They design their own label called "This Old Thing?" and their store carries a variety of desirable goods by other designers. And. . .they're having a small gathering of friends tomorrow for some champagne and mark downs. I wish I could go, but I have to work. . . but if you live around Greenpoint. . . you should go say "hello" and introduce yourself.

And That's Saying A Lot - Natural Calamity

Last night I stayed up very late. It wasn't my intention, it just happened. I met my neighbors for poker (and watched the lady take all). I went to a birthday party at Lit and saw some very silly dancing. And then I met more neighbors and stayed up until 5am and got sandwiches from the Dunkin' Donuts, right up the street, which I had no idea about (and was probably better off and thinner in my ignorance). But before all that, I worked a full day at Nylon. And I wore my fancy new Daryl K. cardi. . .ahhh happiness.

Hair - (Sung by the Original London cast)

Something about my sister's job is bad luck. (She might agree with me on that in more than one way). Whenever I go there, something lands on me. Last time it was bird poo. Just recently, I was leaving and someone opened an awning which left me soaked. So, I dragged my angry, defeated derriere to Frances' Beauty Salon on Avenue A and 14th. Mercedes is the best thing my sister has shown me about New York. She is excellent and she does EVERYONES hair. She charges me the same amount she charges a little old caucasian lady for a blowout (sometimes I get charged more which technically is discrimination. . . but it's the way of the world I'm finding. . . ) Anyways, I love Mercedes. I come in frustrated and angry and leave with beautiful hair and a better outlook on life having learned a few new words in Spanish.

Mercedes asked me if my younger sister had left her new fancy hair in. My sister had fancy, long extentions sewn into her hair for a fashion show recently. While she enjoyed having long fake hair. . . they were starting to get dirty. . . so it was time for them to come out. I told Mercedes "no" and she chuckled. I did not tell Mercedes the long story. Sis got so bored/sick of the extentions that she had her boyfriend try to take them out. When they wouldn't come out easy, she passed him the scissors and he cut them out. (I imagine the scene resembled the one from Sixteen Candles when Jake Ryan's hot girlfriend, Caroline gets her hair drunkenly stuck in the door. So, she has her equally drunk friend, cut her hair out from the door, than Caroline, thanks her friend. . . drunkenly).
Anyways once sis was free of the hair, they took turns putting it on Julian's cat (Jacqsie) and finally resolved to go outside and tie it to people's cars. If ever there was a thought in my mind that Julian was not a perfect fit for my sis. . . it was erased once I heard that hairy tale.

Trains On Top of the Game - Prefuse 73

My friend Ariana finds these New Balance trainers to be "gross". What do you think? I won't be running out to buy a pair. Why would I want to wear that iconic art on the bottom of my shoes?

Honey Bunny - Vincent Gallo

I used to think that people that cried while watching movies, were such losers. As karma would have it, I am now that person. Miss Potter is a heart achingly beautiful film. And Renee Zellweger always brings this squishy faced, charm to any British role she plays. (People who don't think Bridget Jones is entertaining, are just no fun).

I loved all the hats worn in the movie.
Reminds me of all the straw hats, kids in New York are sporting this summer.

And it makes me long for the straw hat, which I stole off my Grammy when I was 10. Must retrieve that from home.
But more than anything, "Miss Potter" only nurtured the unhealthy obsession I've had with the Lake District. It has always struck me as a magical where romance and good books are created. I use to daydream about the Lake District at my interior design job. I would envision myself sitting by a lake, dipping my toe in the water and writing in my journal.

There is only one thing which can be done. I must go to Maine. I made up my mind on Saturday. I'm going to Maine soon. The time is now.

Brooklyn - Mos Def

Brooklyn has grown on me. I like it here. It feels like home. This weekend was the Bushwick Open Studios weekend.
Many artists in the area, with loft space, opened up their studios (and often homes), to passerbyers. . . to share their work and drink some wine.

The evening were followed up by parties and music.

Sometimes, Brooklyn reminds me of East London. . . sometimes. . especially when it rains, like it has today.

Notas - Gotan Project

Hangover French Toast
1 egg
2 egg whites
1/4 cup milk (or Lactaid if you're lactose intolerant)
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
dash nutmeg
8 slices French bread, sliced on diagonal

In a shallow bowl, whisk egg and egg white until foamy. Whisk in milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Heat butter in heavy skillet over medium-low heat.

Place coated bread slices in hot skillet. Cook, turning, until both sides are nicely browned, about 2 minutes each side.
Eat with roommate and neighbor and laugh about who drank what the night before.
Wear pretty white dress from H&M which cost $12, with cheap beads and a sash to give you that french boudoir je ne sais pas oh. . . and be sure to listen to plenty of Gotan Project.
