I'm On Fire - Bat For Lashes (Bruce Springsteen originally)

I can't stop listening to this song. I've had it on repeat for possibly two weeks now. Oh how relevant it truly is. The strings in this song, give it a warm, autumny sound. Makes me want to sit in front of a fire and cuddle with someone. That would be so nice! Stina Persson's art career should be on fire. She's been on the circuit for so long and I hold her responsible for a lot the beautiful water colour illustration we see in magazines.

The beautiful song. . .

Lesson In Survival - Joni Mitchell

Survival lesson one. Laughter is forgetting. I can't stop smiling in the photos below because I was being made fun of by my sister and her boyfriend James in between shots. The absolute butt of every joke today.

I walked in the door and heard "What?!? Hammer time!!".

I opened my notebook to jot down an observation and heard "Dear Diary, no one seems to understand my Hammer pants", followed by James' maniacal laughter.
We pulled up to a stop sign on our way to breakfast. . . and of course. . .wait for it. . .wait for it. . . "Stop!! Hammer time", echoed through the car, followed by more laughter.
For years, women's trousers have been so fitted and constricting. It's nice to get away from that, without taking the skirt or dress option. And if I recall correctly, this lady was quite the fashion plate when this movie was made.

I bet no one in Paris, made fun of this infinitely-cooler-than-thou lady, as she stomped down the street. I'm thinking heels is the right way to go with pants this baggy. And a blazer really polishes the outfit up too. I'll have to try that option next time, but today was all about comfort.

Lover Come Back To Me - Billie Holiday

I need to busy myself.
I need to perfect my knitting.
I need to finish that unloved skirt which lies in my basement.
I need to finish a short story.
I need a full time job.
I need to finish some of the books on my book pile.
I need to quit skipping ballet.
I need to listen to my French tapes.
I need to stop listening to Billie Holiday, she makes me sadder.
I need to go for a jog.
That's it. Going jogging.

Autumn Acid - UZiq

Autumn has arrived like a full kick in the pants. First the rain, then the chill. So I'll take a moment of silence to mourn the summer which I complained about way too often. Sorry summer. . . I didn't appreciate you enough while you were here. My inspiration is really low these days, so I'm totally pulling from the deep here :(

Rain - Ryuichi Sakamoto (one of the most beautiful scores you might hear)

Rain is for coffee with good friends, who offer a warm hug, good advice and cheap shoe shopping.

Making new friends named Dave, who tell you to "follow your heart, because you only get one chance",

And eating cookies and playing impossible board games with old friends, who love you, no matter how crazy and irrational your behaviour may be. My life would be so dull without my friends. I love you SB, MB, MJ, MM. Whatever happens with the situation I'm in, in a way, you guys makes me feel kinda complete (followed by cheesy circle motion with hands).

So Much More - Beth Orton

Well I'm done with all that work and now I've hit the "what-do-I-do-next?" slump. . . which of course is followed by mental blocks and feelings of uselessness. There is of course someone special involved, which is causing me to have quite the brain fart. Last week, I was not only dressing to be taken serious, but I was dressing to be noticed (by him), so I was really on my game, both mentally and physically. . . which is exhausting. This gorgeous dress from Le Train Bleu with it's fifty different options, could have helped out in the wardrobe department. I went through all my favourite dresses before the week was over. One minute you're ready for work, with a twist of the straps, you're ready to play. It would have been perfect for my scenerio.

Pas Si Simple - Yann Tiersen

Pardon the interruption, I have a straight week of freelance work with a French news network (my first). I am enjoying it, but the days are full and stressful, which leaves little time for blogging. Will resume shortly.

In the meantime, my socks came in the mail today. They are awesome and will look good with so many of my shoes!

Iceblink Luck - Cocteau Twins

Winter is definitely coming. . . but why rush the the season with tights all the time? (I will want to burn all my tights by February, out of frustration anyway). I took the plunge and ordered the Super Basics from Sock Dreams in Charcoal Grey. I plan on wearing them with my dresses. Maybe over tights for extra warmth. Meredyth swears by this site, everyone swears by this site. . . it's about time I jumped on board. (Did I mention they ship in the US for free?)

Shining - Peace Orchestra

Marni necklaces always remind me of toys and trinkets that I owned when I was a wee little girl. This reminds me of a baby's puzzle. Or a toy with interlocking pieces. They're such bright, shiny baubles, which draw the eye. I could wait forever until I feel wealthy and decadent enough to buy one, or I could get inspired and make my own. . .

Doba - Simian

I am guilty of wishing for fall, until it arrives with a cold blast of wind. Then I realize the mistake I made.

I am guilty of missing Virginia, when I am in New York and New York when I am in Virginia.

I am not guilty of missing the way people perceive fashion in the DC metropolitan.
Comment of the Day: Are you doing Halloween early in the black dress and orange tights?
All I can do is shrug my shoulders and smile. . .
I suppose I do look a little seasonal.

Dollars & Cents - Radiohead

Of course when I don't have a steady income, is when I can find fifty different things to spend money on. . . and when I have a steady income, that is when I can't find anything to spend my money on. Right now, I could certainly use these things from La Garconne
Les Prairies Des Paris keeps making these delicate pieces, which I love.

This cashmere sweater looks perfect for almost any occasion (work, play, travel, whatever)

And this sleeveless linen jersey top would probably look slick underneath the sweater, and even better when you peel the sweater off in the evening. I've actually had my eye on both these pieces for some time. And now they're on sale and I can't afford them. Great.
Meanwhile at Creatures of Comfort

I can't decide which pair of Melissa jelly shoes to buy (I can actually afford these). My mother always lovingly tells me to steer clear of red for my size 10 feet. But some how, I feel my feet are telling me to buy them. They want to scream "look at me, look at me", constantly. . .as I have an affinity for red shoes.

Common Knowledge - Quantic

It is common knowledge that it is not getting colder here any time soon. It is October and today I am wearing a denim skirt and tank top. I have given up on rushing the seasons and just reverted back to summer wear.

It is also common knowledge that everyone loves a cupcake.
Yesterday we (my friends and I) were incredibly bored, so we made cupcakes for another friend's birthday.

They came out nearly perfect. (The icing was a little runny which I thought made the cupcakes resemble the ghosts from Pacman). We borrowed a recipe similar to that of Magnolia Bakery in New York. You want to know why those cupcakes are so good? Because they are FILLED with sugar and lard. Here's the recipe for you to try:

MAGNOLIA'S CUPCAKES:
(Makes about two dozen, depending on the size of your cupcake papers and muffin tins)

1 and 1/2 cups of self-rising flour
1 and 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
2 cups sugar
4 large eggs, at room temperature
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line two 12 cup muffin tins with cupcake papers
2. In a small bowl, comvine the flours, Set aside.
3. In a large bown, on medium speed of an electric mixer, cream butter until smooth. Add the sugar gradually and beat until fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the dry ingradients in three parts, alternating with the milk and vanilla. With each addition, beat until the ingredients are well down blended. Carefulle spoon the batter into the cupcake liners, filling them about three-quarters full. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cake tester (inserted in the center of the cupcake comes out clean.
4. Cool the cupcakes in the tins for 15 minutes. Remove from tins and cool completely on a wire rack before icing.

Sugary Icing
(Makes enough for two dozen cupcakes. . . actually, we ended up dumping half of the icing down the drain. It makes too much icing. There will be no icing shortage if you follow their recipe)

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
6 to 8 cups of confectioners sugar
1/2 cup milk
2 teaspoons vanilla extract)

Place butter in a large mixing bowl. Add 4 cups of the sugar and then the milk and vanilla. On the medium speed of an electric mixer, beat until smooth and creamy, about 3-5 minutes. Gradually add the remaining sugar, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition (about 2 minutes), until the icing is thick enough to be of good spreading consistency (this is where we went wrong). You may not need to add all the sugar. If desired, add a few drops of food colouring and mix throughly. (Use and store the icing at room temperature because icing will set if chilled). Icing can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Hands - Four Tet

I had an awesome weekend of eating good food . . . like the amazing french toast you see below (aside from brunch, my Grammy made a fabulous dinner). . .

. .. and making things. I made a dress for my friend who had nothing to wear is attending a wedding soon.

I don't claim to be the best/most experienced seamstress (sooner or later, I may take a class), but to be able to make something for someone and have them love it, is one of the best feelings in the world for me. My strength lies in the ability to create.

Red - Dani Siciliano

Take one bored girl, with one Salvation Army fabric panel (which has been washed).

One idea, basic inspiration (and a free afternoon):

And you get one fantastic red dress. (I might chop it shorter because right now, it only looks good with heels).

L-O-V-E- - (Sung by Joss Stone)

I don't watch a lot of television, which is a shameful confession being that it is my occupation du jour, but I caught the tail end of this Chanel advertisement last night and I fell in L-O-V-E with Keira Knightley. I love Chanel even more now. And on that note, I'm going to go work on my own red dress (which I'm sewing).

Kelly Watch The Stars - Air

My father filmed Sputnik at his job yesterday (I believe it was on it's way to the National Air and Space Museum). Apparently, it's not very big (or as big as some of us might imagine). Either way, he was excited, I was excited. It's history. . .

September Song - Django Reinhardt

I find that I do my best fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants work when I am sitting up late, listening to ex-boyfriend music. Something about remembering ex-boyfriends, makes me want to work harder to be the best. Strange, isn't it? Exboyfriend music includes: Goldfrapp, Django Reinhardt and Kelis. A couple of my exes absolutely praised Django Reinhardt. I wonder what the correlation there is.

I don't usually date total cads (although I have dated one or two). But still. . . it's interesting.

Anyways, this dress is for my lovely older sister. She has had a very trying September. Here she is with her boyfriend James. They are simply delightful and I love them.

September Song - Stephane Grappelli

Last weekend, I took myself and my lil camera down to the Crafty Bastards festival in DC to photograph some of DC's finest. If you are one of the featured people in these shots, please go find your photos on www.nylonmag.com in a few days. I promise they'll be there! xoxo!
(UPDATE: Few days? Maybe a couple of weeks. . .)
